Autumn Update

Its been a while since our last workshop with CEDARS but over the Summer we have been assembling the banners!

The Westlands banner has been delivered and installed and looks fabulous. It was good to know that some of the staff will be continuing to use feltmaking with the pupils and for their own creative enjoyment.

The NCHS and Seabridge banners are also complete and ready for delivery and installation and the CEDARS and St Giles and St Georges work is on its way!

CEDARS

We spent two wonderful days last week working with the students and staff of CEDARS Knutton and Penkhull bases.

At the Knutton base we delivered four one hour sessions with four groups and made felt pieces adorned with individually designed symbols of friendship.

At the Penkhull base we made masking tape resist textile designs and felt pieces.

All participants had the opportunity to make friendship wristlets to take away with them.

Newcastle Community High School

We spent two wonderful days working with students and staff in the NCHS textiles department.

Looking at themes of friendship, diversity within our communities and patterns and symbols in other cultures, the students created some unique artworks that will be assembled creating a large colourful banner to brighten up the new textile department studio.

Seabridge Primary School

We worked with pupils from Seabridge Primary in May and had a brilliant time looking at the different ways that the school connects with the surrounding community.

We also discussed the qualities the school would like to show towards the wider community.

The pupils created some beautiful felt and painted textile artwork that will be assembled into a banner for the school assembly hall.

St Giles and St Georges Primary School

On 18th and 19th May we worked with pupils in years 5 and 6 to create felt pieces and masking tape resist words around the theme of transition.

We worked in pairs and made visual diagrams to explain how we felt about our present situation and school and our hopes and fears for the future, in relation to moving on to high school. The subjects of friendship and making new friends were present in all of the diagrams.

All of the pupils recognised that they felt more comfortable about moving to high school after discussions and the creative workshops.

After the holidays!

Over the Easter break we have been busy in the studio assembling the textile banners made by students from Our Lady St Werburghs Catholic Primary and Blackfriars School. The banners will be installed in their respective schools on 16th May.

Before the next half term break we will be working with pupils from Knutton St Marys Primary, Silverdale Primary, St Giles and St Georges Primary, Seabridge Primary and Clayton Hall Business College.

The students at Clayton Hall will be designing, making and installing a mosaic in an outdoor communal space in the school grounds; at the first session on on May 5th they started work on their designs.

At the next session we will begin the making of the mosaic using glass tiles......

Last session at Our Lady St Werburghs

The year 5 pupils have worked hard to create some beautiful artwork and have actually made more than we can fit onto one banner, so we will be making another one to go outside their classroom.

Positioning the felt and fabric word designs onto the banner,

and making an extra banner to accommodate all the extra artwork!

More from Blackfriars

The first time we have ever seen felt being made using a wheelchair!

The finished felt pieces laid out and ready to be fixed onto the banner.

Friarswood Primary School

Last week we had two very busy afternoons working with pupils in year 2 to make felt shapes and friendship bracelets and yesterday worked with Mrs Herman's lovely year 6 class.

We identified some words that linked to our thoughts and ideas about friendship and community and proceeded to create fabric designs using these words with masking tape and paint.....

 Reliable

 Playful

 Funny

 Be polite

Fun

The students worked really hard to make their designs unique and colourful.

We have one more afternoon with the year 5 pupils and then can start assembling the work!
